HOAGIE’S WORLD

The origins of the renowned “Hoagie” sandwich are deeply intertwined with the rich history and local legends of the City of Philadelphia. The truth behind its name is a matter of personal belief, as the saying goes,

“Never let the truth get in the way of a good story."

One popular legend suggests that the Hoagie originated with the post-World War I South Philly dock workers on Hog Island. Another theory attributes its name to Al Di Palma, who named a deli sandwich packed with Italian meats, cheeses, and pickles a “Hoggy” because only a Hog could finish it. Alternatively, some believe the name is derived from the Irish last name Hogan, which was common in the area at the time, or from Italian immigrants mispronouncing the submarine-shaped sandwiches from the “Hokey Pokey” man, a popular street vendor during the 1930s.
Regardless of its exact origin, the Hoagie has endured the test of time and has firmly established itself as sandwich royalty. At Hoagie’s World of Hoagies, we are committed to honoring these traditions by using top-quality ingredients, providing a warm and welcoming smile, and perhaps sharing a story or two of our own.
